Solar String Lights Not Working? 5 Things to Check and Fix
Check the Solar Panel Position First
The most common reason a solar string light stops working is poor sunlight exposure. The solar panel needs several hours of direct sunlight during the day – not behind glass, not under a tree shade or roof overhang. Make sure the panel surface faces the sun.
Understand Charging and Runtime
Our EMSMIL solar lights take about 5–8 hours of sunshine to charge and then run for 6–10 hours. If the lights go out after a few hours, that is normal. With brand new lights, the battery may not be fully charged at first – give them a full charge on day one.
Check the On/Off Switch and Modes
Many models have a small switch on the back of the solar panel plus a mode button. If the lights won't turn on, the switch may be in the wrong position. Press the mode button a few times to cycle through the 8 lighting modes (combination, waves, sequential, etc.).
Watch Out for Moisture in the Battery Compartment
Even though our lights are waterproof (IP44 or IP65), moisture that gets into the battery compartment can disturb the contacts. Open the compartment, carefully dry the contacts and check that the battery sits properly.
Wait for the Light Sensor
Solar string lights switch on automatically at dusk via a light sensor. Test the unit in dim light or cover the sensor with your hand to see if the LEDs light up. If not, the battery or LEDs may be faulty.
