Waterproof Solar Lights: IP44 vs IP65 Explained Simply
What Does the IP Rating Mean?
The IP rating (International Protection) describes how well a device is protected against solids and water. The first digit stands for protection against solid objects (e.g. dust), the second for protection against water. The higher the number, the better the protection.
IP44: For Most Gardens and Patios
IP44 means: protection against solid objects over 1 mm (e.g. wires) and protection against splashing water from all directions. Many EMSMIL solar string lights are IP44 protected – ideal for patios, balconies and gardens where they must withstand rain and splashes.
IP65: Even Better Against Water
IP65 additionally offers protection against water jets (water streams from any angle). Our solar fairy rope lights come with IP65 – the copper wires are covered with flexible rubber and reliably withstand even heavy rain.
Which Version Suits You?
For most garden and balcony uses, IP44 is completely sufficient. If your string lights are exposed to particularly harsh conditions – for example hanging freely without shelter or in rainy regions – IP65 is the safer choice.
Tip for Longevity
Regardless of the rating, mount the solar panel so it never stands in water permanently, and check the battery occasionally in winter. This keeps your string lights working for many seasons.
